Details

The photographer Slim Aarons famously sought to photograph, “Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” In January 1970, Palm Springs was not only one of those places, but also the setting for what has become Slim’s most celebrated work, Poolside Gossip. The series of photographs made during a poolside party at the Kaufmann House is now considered an icon of midcentury style.

However, the poolside party/Kaufmann House photos are not alone. Slim took hundreds of other photographs in Palm Springs which are in the archives–most rarely seen–until now.

Presenter Shawn Waldron will discuss Aaron's globetrotting journey from WWII combat journalist to becoming the 20th century’s premier lifestyle photographer, including an in-depth look at Slim’s connections to Palm Springs.

Shawn Waldron is an archivist and curator specializing in photography. Based in New York City, he oversees the Slim Aarons Archive and is curator of print sales and exhibitions at Getty Images. Prior to joining Getty Images, he was director of the Conde’ Nast Archive for more than a decade. He is the author of the bestselling monographs Slim Aarons: Style (Abrams, 2021), and Slim Aarons: The Essential Collection (Abrams, 2023).

Following the presentation, Shawn will sign copies of his new book, Slim Aarons: The Essential Collection (Abrams, 2023).
