An Introduction to Herbert Bayer and the Bauhaus–Aspen Connection

The newly opened Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, located in Aspen, CO, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the artist and designer Herbert Bayer (1900–1985)—one of the leading figures to translate the Bauhaus movement into an American context—and his contributions to art, design, and architecture.

It anchors the Aspen Institute’s campus-wide visual arts program, which includes over 7,000 square feet of gallery space and multiple site-specific outdoor art installations. Herbert Bayer studied and taught at the Bauhaus before emigrating from Germany to the United States in 1938.

Acting Director Lissa Ballinger shares Bayer’s journey from NY to Aspen, where between 1946 and 1975, Bayer was instrumental in Aspen’s postwar revitalization, designing the Aspen Institute campus and shaping the organization’s early artistic and programmatic vision. The Bayer Center.

Lissa Ballinger has served in different capacities for the Aspen Institute since 2013–as associate director, art registrar, and curator. Her current role builds on her prior work representing the Institute in the Aspen arts community and managing the art collection and exhibitions on both the Aspen Meadows campus and at the Aspen Institute’s headquarters in Washington, DC. She also coordinated the successful centennial celebration of the Bauhaus held at the Aspen Institute in 2019. She graduated from Georgetown University and received her master’s degree in arts administration from Columbia University.
