Details

Anni Albers is considered one of the most influential textile artists of the 20th century. Born Annelise Elsa Frieda Fleischmann in 1899 in Berlin, Albers studied at the Bauhaus, where upon completion of the preliminary course, reluctantly took up weaving, the only faculty open to women. Regardless, Albers went on to excel at her craft, taking weaving to new artistic heights, eventually directing the weaving workshop.

At the Bauhaus, Albers met her future husband, artist Josef Albers, with whom she escaped to the USA after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933. Taking up teaching positions at the pioneering Black Mountain College, the Albers were instrumental in spreading the ideals of modernism. In 1949 Albers became the first textile designer to have a solo exhibition at MoMA, New York.

Over a decade ago, London based textile and wallpaper company Christopher Farr Cloth, partnered with the Joseph and Anni Albers Foundation to re-introduce Albers designs from the Bauhaus to work created at Tamarind Prints, California.

After studying fine arts and art history Michal Silver worked as a fashion designer for over 15 years in New York and Paris before relocating to England, as Head Designer for Mulberry. Silver’s innovative incorporation of Mulberry’s home collection fabrics into her fashion designs opened a new world, eventually leading her to form Christopher Farr Cloth in 2000, with partners Christopher Farr and Matthew Bourne.
