What do set designers know that we don’t? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot! With a degree in architecture and an obsession with set design, Marina Coates offers an up-close look at the unique concept of “cinematic design.”

Today's presentation, The True Masters of Design, will explore the unique set of design principles that make us fall in love with these homes, including such cinematic masterpieces as:

  • The breathtaking Mt. Rushmore home from North by Northwest (1959)
  • The iconic ocean-side home from A Star is Born (1954) a true midcentury delight
  • The incredible Spanish Colonial Revival ranch house from The Parent Trap, (1961)
  • And many more

Marina will also reveal the foundational principles of Cinematically Inspired Design ®

  • creating a mood
  • telling a story
  • and their by-product: timelessness

Some of the basic tools and tenets will be explored, including color beyond, color dispersion, metaphor, and scale. As an additional feature, Marina will also present virtual tours of the movie homes. Audience members will get to walk through these homes room by room, while Marina lays out the unique set of design principles that make these homes so special and make us fall in love with them. Learn how to bring these same elements into your own homes by using design to create the mood you want there and to tell your story because….all great design is personal.

Marina presented last year at Modernism Week, with her virtual tours of classic TV homes entitled, Honey, I’m Home! She is presenting an encore version this year called, Honey, I’m Back on February 19 with even more TV home tours.
