"California Captured: Mid-Century Modern Architecture" - The Photography of Marvin Rand
Los Angeles photographer Marvin Rand created iconic images of some of the most celebrated architectural creations of his time, photographing buildings by the likes of Modernist masters Craig Ellwood, Louis Kahn, Welton Becket, and Frank Lloyd Wright to capture the essence of their work - and, in doing so, played a critical role in shaping the Mid-Century California style now worshiped the world over. The discovery of Rand's archive has brought a treasure trove of midcentury modern architectural images to life, and the new book California Captured: Mid-Century Modern Architecture (Phaidon Publishers, 2018) beautifully showcases it - and the period - as never before.
Emily Bills is an educator, author, and curator based in Los Angeles. She is Participating Adjunct Professor of Urban Studies, former Managing Director of the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University and has curated many exhibitions of work by photographers of the built environment.
Sam Lubell is a writer based in New York and has authored eight books about architecture forPhaidon, Rizzoli, Metropolis Books and Monacelli Press. He is contributing editor at The Architect’s Newspaperand writes for publications such as the New York Times, Wallpaper, Architectural Record and the Los Angeles Times. He has curated exhibitions at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles and at The Queens Museum.
Pierluigi Serraino, AIA, is an architect, author, and educator based in the San Francisco BayArea. His work and writings have been published in professional and scholarly journals including Architecture World, Artforum, Architectural Design and The Architect’s Newspaper. He has authored and contributed to several books, among them Modernism Rediscovered, Eero Saarinen, and The Creative Architect: Inside the Great Personality Study.
