Tamarisk Ranchos 1958 by William Krisel: Historic Community Homes Once Owned by Hollywood's Finest

Tamarisk Ranchos was designed and master-planned by architect William Krisel, built in 1958 by Lou Halper, the founder of nearby Tamarisk Country Club.  Halper and his friend Groucho Marx had their desert homes at Tamarisk Ranchos and were joined by Hollywood's finest, including film and TV producers, screenwriters, and agents.  Members of Frank Sinatra's entourage had homes there including his banker, Al Hart and family physician Dr. Krohn, and subsequently Barbara Marx, who became his second wife. 

The resort-style community features 16 homes gathered around a central pool and lush landscaping dotted with citrus trees and 100-year-old date palm trees. The San Jacinto mountains are the backdrop for this midcentury paradise, made more alluring by homes that all face inward to the gardens. Unlike many resort communities of the time, these homes have their own individual look. Three different rooflines: butterfly, long gable and horizontal gable are complemented by varying design details such as patchwork rock facades or stylish wood screens.  Homes are approximately 2,000 sq ft with similar floor plans; some still have a maid's room, many have original features and include period furnishings.  Last open in 2019, there are new homes on tour. 

Melissa Riche and Jim Riche, writer/photographer of the book Mod Mirage (pub. Gibbs Smith, 2018) own their home here and will sign books.

Proceeds go towards improving landscaping and lighting sustainability.

Allow 1.5 - 2 hours for the tour - After parking, the tour is conducted on foot via flat pathways.
To avoid confusion, and as a courtesy to other tour goers, please arrive at your designated tour start time.
No children or pets and no smoking please.
Large purses and/or backpacks are discouraged.
Restrooms are not available for tour use.
Interior photography is permitted for personal use.
Please be respectful of the neighborhood and do not park in front of mail boxes or driveways.
