Since 2022, Modernism Week has presented Stories Untold, focused on the history and narratives of architects and design professionals historically left out of the spotlight.

This year, Modernism Week celebrates buildings and venues designed to illuminate untold stories, honor diverse voices, and foster meaningful connections with the past: the recently opened International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, SC, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and Destination Crenshaw in the Crenshaw community of Los Angeles, CA.

Sharing this story will be esteemed guests Dr. Tonya Matthews, President, and CEO of IAAM, and Walter Hood, renowned landscape designer, MacArthur 'Genius Grant' Fellow, and designer of IAAM's African Ancestors Memorial Garden; also, Gabrielle Bullock, Director of Global Diversity at the international architectural design firm, Perkins&Will, which co-designed the Smithsonian Museum, and Jason W. Foster, the President and COO of Destination Crenshaw.

Dr. Matthews will talk about leading the IAAM, which strives to tell the story of African American history, from its origins in Africa to its contemporary impact. She will explain how the IAAM's architecture and landscape work together to document this historical journey.

Walter Hood will share his creative vision behind the IAAM's African Ancestors Memorial Garden. This sprawling garden reflects on the significance of the museum’s location on Gadsden's Wharf, a historically sacred site where approximately 40 percent of enslaved Africans entered the United States.

Following a short break, the presentation will shift its focus to two other remarkable 'remembrance work' projects, one which is national in scope, the other focused on a local community: the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and Destination Crenshaw in the Crenshaw community of Los Angeles, CA.

Gabrielle Bullock will discuss the narratives and design strategies at The Smithsonian Museum, which honors the significant contributions of African Americans to the nation's social, economic, and cultural fabric.

Perkins&Will also led in the creation of Destination Crenshaw; a transformative 1.3-mile art park set to debut in early 2024. This project aims to revitalize Crenshaw Boulevard, a historic center for the Black community in Los Angeles, while elevating Black art and culture.

Jason W. Foster, the President and COO of Destination Crenshaw, will highlight the public art planned for the community, and discuss the project's mission to serve as an economic engine for revitalizing the Crenshaw corridor. He'll also shed light on DC THRIVE, an initiative that provides vital support to Black-owned businesses in the Crenshaw district.

With its architecturally stunning community spaces, pocket parks, hundreds of newly planted trees, and over 100 commissioned art installations, Destination Crenshaw stands as the largest public/private Black art program in the U.S.

Frances Anderton, a respected writer, editor, broadcaster, and curator, will conclude the session by moderating a Q+A session with the panel of presenters.
