Details
The house was designed and built in 1975 by John Walling, AIA, for the Shea family. It is a classic example of Late Modernism. Some clear, defining features are: the use of natural, raw materials, black/smoked glass throughout, natural and grounded color pallets, all implemented within large, bolder, heavier spaces and forms. The decor juxtaposes the home's earthy elements with glamour, chrome, flashy, "space age" (sometimes dystopian) themes and ideas, with pieces created by notable designers of the era such as Gaetano Sciolari, Geoffry Harcourt, Bitossi for Raymor, Warren Platner, Florence Knoll, Pierre Paulin and Harry Bertoia. The house is drenched in earth toned color ways that connect to the home's raw materials and embody the ideals of the early/mid 1970s. In addition to these features the house exemplifies all the fundamental components of earlier Modernism such as indoor/outdoor flow through walls of glass, long sight-lines throughout by way of a singular flooring surface which spans through outdoor spaces, a strong connection to nature and the site on which the home is built, and a clear and intentional restraint in architectural details and furnishings.

The restoration was completed in November of 2017 by Daniel Krog Design and received the Palm Springs Modern Committee's Residential Rehabilitation Award in 2019.
