Details
Your luxury tour bus departs from Palm Springs promptly at 9:30AM for a comfortable 1 ½ hr. drive west to the historic Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts campus in Alta Loma, the former residence of famed mid-20th century designer-craftsman, Sam Maloof (1916-2019). malooffoundation.org

Sam, a 1985 recipient of the MacArthur Genius grant, was a pioneer in modern woodworking who brought together old-world craftsmanship with a midcentury modernist aesthetic. His work is included in scores of important public and private collections, including the permanent collection of the Smithsonian.

Upon arrival, guests will be taken on a private docent-led tour of the historic home of Sam and Alfreda Maloof. In addition to the organic modern architecture of the home, designed and built by Sam, guests will view over 50 pieces of iconic handcrafted Maloof furniture, many original prototypes. The home also boasts an extensive art collection featuring works by the group of Claremont artists instrumental in ushering in the Post-War Modernist movement in California including Harrison McIntosh, Betty Davenport Ford and Karl Benjamin.

After a buffet- style picnic lunch in the property’s beautiful gardens and patios, guests will be the first to view the new exhibit “Jack Rogers Hopkins: California Design Maverick” and the documentary film of the same name. The curators of the exhibit will be on site for a Q+A after the screening. Jack Hopkins was a contemporary of Sam Maloof and an important San Diego teacher and designer-craftsman from San Diego.

The tour departs the Maloof Foundation at 3:00 p.m. for arrival in Palm Springs approximately 4:30 p.m.
