Inside, Outside, Poolside: Living the Sandcliff Lifestyle

Welcome to Sandcliff–a quintessential example of a “lifestyle” condominium that characterized midcentury Palm Springs! A 1964 advertisement in Palm Springs Life magazine touted the newly completed complex as the city’s “most luxurious, resident-owned apartments offering an exhilarating, carefree way of life…for the most discerning resident.”

This remarkably intact city-designated historic district features lushly landscaped grounds, abundant fruit trees, and original pools and loggias. Designed by Sherwin L. Barton, the community’s 40 condominium units are arranged in pin-wheel clusters of three to minimize common walls while maximizing outdoor living spaces. Exteriors are characterized by floor to ceiling fixed glass windows and sliding glass doors that lead to private patios enclosed with decorative concrete screen block walls.

The Sandcliff walking tour takes you to six special homes that showcase the ideals of the midcentury lifestyle. Selected homes represent a range of floor plans, sizes, and décor, with one retaining most of the original interior features including the kitchen with built-in Nutone appliances and bathroom with a sunken tub.  

The adventure begins at our picturesque and much-photographed main entrance where homeowners will greet you with handouts describing the tour homes, highlighting features of the community, and identifying “photo op” areas with unparalleled views of the surrounding desert mountains and palm trees that characterize the Palm Springs landscape. The midcentury lifestyle experience wraps up at the Sandcliff south pool with an opportunity to mingle while enjoying complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
