Details
David Coffey and Sian Winship, Board Members of the Society of Architectural Historians/Southern California Chapter, share one of the most unexpected collections of modern architecture: Bakersfield.

Modern masters including Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, and Cliff May designed homes there, as did a talented group of local modern post-and-beam architects—all graduates of the USC School of Architecture. While a steady economy of oil and agriculture money fueled early modernism, learn why a midcentury earthquake was every architect’s favorite natural disaster.

Experience one of the most unexpected concentrations of modern architecture just 100 miles from Los Angeles. From Art Deco, to the International Style, to Brutalism, Bakersfield has it all.

Mark your calendar now and plan to attend!  Every five years, the exhibit, symposium and home tours known as Bakersfield Built celebrate that legacy. September 28, 2024 will be the date for the next Bakersfield Built event and details can be found on the Bakersfield Museum of Art website BMOA.org
