Details
New Zealand modernist architect Peter Mark-Brown (1929–1978) died when his son, Simon Mark-Brown was 17. Brown vs. Brown is a documentary Simon first started 23 years ago, as a way to seek understanding of his architect father, about whom there was some mystery: a changed name, a second family.
It is also an in-depth overview of midcentury modernist architecture in New Zealand, and the tension between the ‘regionalist' and the ‘internationalist’ architects. Simon explores his late father’s work during this era, how he fitted in and why he changed his name.
Brown vs. Brown mixes family and architectural history in a feature length film that takes you on a whirlwind tour of New Zealand’s midcentury architecture. The film is an important look at the history of residential architecture in New Zealand. It is visual, dramatic, funny, fascinating and tragic.
Aotearoa (New Zealand) 2023 / 95 min. Simon Mark-Brown, Director & Producer.
