The Goldberg Residence - PS ModCom Iconic Home Tour
$45 (30 min)
Situated high in the hills overlooking Palm Springs in the community of Southridge sits the Goldberg residence, AKA the Southridge Cody Glass House, designed in 1962 and considered to be a masterpiece by acclaimed architect William F. Cody.
Chicago industrialist and inventor Stanley Goldberg and his wife Phyllis fell in love with the house, designed by Cody as a spec house for the developers, and purchased it while under construction. The Goldberg's retained Cody and iconic interior designer Arthur Elrod to make it one of Palm Spring’s most elegant homes. The two expanded the size and footprint of the glass and steel international style house, incorporating distinctive features including a glamorous sunken, wood paneled bar and an exquisite book-matched travertine fireplace.
In 2016, designer Michael Johnston and Broadway lyricist David Zippel purchased the house. By this time the house had been severely neglected. Johnston worked from Cody’s original plans, restoring the glass atrium in the center of the house, that had been covered over, recreating the extremely thin roofline. He expanded the reflecting pool, deepening it to double as a hot therapy pool in an outdoor glass enclosed garden. He installed Terrazzo floors Cody originally specified but never poured and recreated Cody’s walnut front doors.
Johnston reimagined the swimming pool, turning it 90 degrees, creating infinity edges on four sides, providing breathtaking views of the valley floor.
In 2018 PS ModCom awarded Michael and David the Residential Rehabilitation Award.
In 2022 the City of Palm Springs designated the house as a Class 1 Historic Site.
