Details
From the moment the Kaufmann house in Palm Springs was captured on camera in 1947, it became a beacon of modernism and one of the most recognizable houses in the world. But all the attention has been tightly focused on three men—the architect Richard J. Neutra, the owner Edgar J. Kaufmann and the photographer Julius Shulman.

Little is known about Liliane Kaufmann, who obligingly blocked the pool light in Julius Shulman’s famous Twilight photo. And even less is known about Edgar Kaufmann’s second wife, who assumed hostessing duties at the desert house after Liliane retreated back to Pittsburgh.

Join Adele Cygelman, author of Palm Springs Modern and Arthur Elrod: Desert Modern Design, as she delves into the lives of the two women who were eclipsed by their better-known husband and even better-known house, and who both met a tragic end.
