Come tour the homes of this iconic desert community! The Sandpiper is considered one of William Krisel’s masterpieces.  It is one of the best remaining examples of a concentration of Desert Modernism in the Coachella Valley. William Krisel designed both the architecture and the landscape architecture of Sandpiper, resulting in an unusually elegant and cohesive community. Built between 1958 and 1969 Sandpiper consists of nine separate real estate subdivisions representing eleven building stages that occurred over a 12-year period. This time span makes this place a unique and historic place.  One can actually see how over time Krisel and the builders responded to the changing needs of homeowners, the availability of building materials, and the current economy in producing a modern product that would successfully celebrate life in our desert!

“…My architecture is not a ‘style’; it is a ‘language.’ I call that language – 'Midcentury Modern’ where anything is possible – where problem-solving and function along with scale, materiality, a cultural relevance meld together to produce ‘Architecture’ – not, ‘starchitects.’ It is an enormous challenge as art and design are everywhere, but architecture is not.  Beauty is a loaded term – beauty and ugliness are very personal – elusive and individual.  I believe in functional architecture with integral ornament and applied ornamentation; I believe in sculptured forms that do not sacrifice the architectural dialog with its users – form should not speak for itself alone."
