Modernist houses have been an important part of New England’s architectural legacy since the 1930s and are integral to the design fabric of several communities. Where a more temperate climate in California allowed houses to be open to the environment, the more severe climate of New England presents technical challenges to achieving thermal comfort.
An architect and builder offer practical advice on renovating mid-century modern homes to maintain the integrity of the original house and improve their thermal performance, comfort and sustainability. Case studies include houses by renowned architects Walter Gropius and Philip Johnson as well as beautifully designed houses by lesser-known architects.
Colin Flavin, AIA is the founder of Flavin Architects. He directs the design of the firm’s residential projects and has cultivated the firm’s unique design approach of Natural Modernism. Flavin’s new house designs favor sculpted lines, timeless materials, and are inspired by the mid-century modern houses the firm has restored.
Mark Doughty is the President of Thoughtforms, an established custom home builder in eastern Massachusetts, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and green building. The 55-person team celebrated 50 years in business in 2022. Mark began college at West Point before an injury saw him transfer to UMass Amherst where he completed his BSc in Civil Engineering. He received his MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management and continues to work with the MIT Sustainability Initiative.
