A Preservation Plan Case Study: Owen Coffman American Legion Post 519

Preservation architect Susan Secoy Jensen has been involved in many preservation projects in southern California, most notably the rehabilitation of the historic 1930 Ice House in Orange, California. Locally, she recently partnered with modernist architect Hugh Kaptur in the highly successful rehabilitation of Kaptur Plaza, a Class 1 Historic Resource of the city of Palm Springs. In 2022, under the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation's grant program, Susan (principal of Secoy Architects) was selected by PSPF, and American Legion Post 519, to develop a "preservation plan" for the legion's building at 400 North Belardo Road in Palm Springs. The historic Late Moderne structure is an architectural gem with impeccable credentials (1947, Clark & Frey) that is only enhanced by its fascinating Hollywood history. Aside from describing the process of developing a preservation plan, Susan will discuss how keeping the legion post operating during any future rehabilitation will pose interesting challenges.
The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.” PSPF offers free membership as a public benefit.
