Indian Trail Tour: Tres Casas Españolas

Palm Springs’ great Spanish Colonial Revival architecture is as notable as its modernist architecture and the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is proud to sponsor a tour of THREE such homes located on South Indian Trail in the city’s historic Warm Sands neighborhood.  One of these homes, the Hal Forrest Residence (Forrest was the creator of the “Tailspin Tommy” comics), was designed by the famous architectural firm of Brewster & Benedict in 1936 and was recently restored.  The other two homes have similarly impressive architectural provenances.  The second home on tour was designed in 1937 by the prominent Los Angeles architectural firm of Meyer & Holler, best known for their work on Grauman’s Chinese Theater.  The remaining home of the tour was designed in 1937 by Los Angeles architect Woodbury Clement Pennell.  Pennell’s involvement shows how Palm Springs was effectively becoming an architectural “outpost” of Los Angeles by the 1930s.  Pennell’s Palm Springs office offered a “complete service,” that not only designed the house, but provided landscaping, construction management, financing, and interior design.  These three enchanting Spanish Colonial Revival homes are within short and easy walking distance of each other.  Tourgoers will receive an informational tour handout and a copy of PSPF’s popular 80-page tribute journal, Desert Spanish: The Early Architecture of Palm Springs.

No children or pets and no smoking.
Large purses and/or backpacks are discouraged.
There are stairs and uneven surfaces.
Interior photography is at the discretion of the homeowner(s).
Restrooms are not available for tour use.
Shoe covers (booties) may be required.
To avoid confusion, and as a courtesy to other tourgoers, please arrive at your designated tour start time.
Please be respectful of the neighborhood and do not park in front of mail boxes or driveways.
