Los Angeles architect and ikebana teacher Ravi GuneWardena will present a lecture on Sogetsu, one of the major schools of ikebana in Japan, and follow with a demonstration of floral arrangements. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging, which traces its history to the 15th century.  The Sogetsu School, founded in 1927 to position the practice as a contemporary art form, has a long history of collaborations with modern artists and provided a forum for contemporary art, film, music, and performance throughout the 20th century.  The school’s teachers in Los Angeles have added a vibrant dimension to the cultural life of Southern California’s Japanese-American Community.

Ravi has been a practitioner of ikebana since 2005 under the tutelage of Haruko Takeichi, a master in the Sogetsu School. During his recent tenure as director of Sogetsu Los Angeles, he facilitated collaborations with various local artists and organizations, expanding the visibility of ikebana as a contemporary art.  Recent large installations include Pile-Up at WUHO Gallery (Woodbury University Hollywood Outpost) (2018); Toward a Raw Materialism, a group exhibition with artists Patty Chang, David Kelley, Ravi GuneWardena, and Miles Coolidge at UC Irvine (2021); and Common Ground, an ikebana collaboration with artist Adam Silverman at JACCC, Los Angeles in 2022.

As a partner at Escher GuneWardena Architecture, he has been involved with the restoration of numerous modernist works, including John Lautner’s Chemosphere, the Eames House, Gregory Ain’s Greene Residence, the Paul R. Williams Residence, Quincy Jones’ Pilot House, and the Neutra Lovell Health House.   eschergunewardena.com
