Frank Lloyd Wright and the Emergence of Global Modernism

In 2019, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognized the work of Frank Lloyd Wright as "pivotal in the development of modern architectural design in the 20th century.”  For some, Wright’s role in the development of global modernism is surprising, as they tend to associate Wright with a romantic American architecture. But Wright was part of an international group of designers, artists, and intellectuals who were responding to sweeping cultural shifts: the rise of industrialization and global trade, new technologies and materials, poverty and inequality, and unhealthy and dehumanizing cities. Modern architects around the world believed that design could grapple with such challenges and improve the lives of everyday people.

President and CEO, Stuart Graff and Dr. Jennifer Gray, Director, of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation will share this history and reflect on Wright and modern architecture’s relevance today as more than just an aesthetic choice that impacts our lives.

—EDUCATING a worldwide audience about the continued relevance of Wright’s architectural and cultural legacy through tours, exhibits, performances, school and youth programs, and digital engagement.

—INFLUENCING the growth of architecture, design, and planning by collaborating with universities, scholars, practitioners, and industry at the intersection of nature and the built environment.

Things to Know

This event is for ages 12 and older.
The entrance to the Annenberg Theater is located behind the Annenberg Theater Box Office, adjacent to the Palm Springs Art Museum's North Parking Lot.
Ample free public parking is available in the multi-level public garage across from the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Handicap parking is available. This event is wheelchair accessible.
