Think of "home" in Los Angeles and what comes to mind? Very likely the lovely single family home in a large yard. But the Southland has also been a laboratory for experiments in multifamily living and Frances Anderton has written a book about them, Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles, newly published by Angel City Press.

Anderton describes Common Ground as "my valentine to an under-appreciated type of housing in Los Angeles: connected and centered on shared open space. In sum, a way of living that is a variant on the exalted SoCal single family home, and just as lovely in its own way. This has been modeled in marvelous buildings past and present -- from modernist courtyard complexes by talents including Irving Gill and Richard Neutra to striking midrise, mixed-use buildings with elevated courts and relaxing roof terraces, designed by leading contemporary architects including Brooks+Scarpa, Michael Maltzan and Lorcan O'Herlihy."

The book was inspired by her own experience living in an early apartment building designed by Frank Gehry, who calls the book "part architectural memoir, part call to arms" that "will get people looking at and thinking about multi-family architecture in a new way." Russell Brown, founder of Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles, describes Common Ground as "an engrossing urban journey peppered with fascinating human stories that presents a vision of Los Angeles that is unexpected and revelatory."  Anderton will share some of the luscious photographs of great buildings featured in the book as well as stories of the talents that made them and the people that live in them.
