Donald Judd (1928-1994) was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work are numerous architectural drawings in which he explores the relationship between architecture and art. In April 1989 the Westfälischer Kunstverein Münster, Germany held the first exhibition devoted to Judd’s architecture entitled, Donald Judd – Architektur. Along with the exhibition came a book with the same title. Donald Judd experimented with architecture all his life, but the exhibition marked the first comprehensive show of his architectural precepts and design work accompanied by Judd’s writing which gained the attention of the architectural discipline.
This event qualifies for 1 AIA/CES Learning Unit (LU).
Since then, the ideas and built work of many postmodernists and deconstructivist architects have faded into the background. Simplicity, or minimalism in architecture which include Judd’s ideas remain remarkably fresh, timeless one might say. Marfa, Texas has become a cultural magnet, attracting visitors across many disciplines of art, architecture, design and more with the love for the remote and the landscape of the Chihuahuan desert.
This presentation will shed some light on why the architectural ideas of Judd are still significant and why the context - including landscape - is fundamental, especially for the desert climate of the American southwest. To look at Judd’s architecture and adaptive-reuse methods in both rural and urban context.
Swiss born architect, author, and photographer, Urs Peter “Upe” Flueckiger is Dean & Professor, Dipl Arch. SIA, College of Architecture, at Texas Tech University. He is the author of Donald Judd: Architecture in Marfa, Texas, the 2nd edition of which was published recently by Birkhäuser (2021).

The entrance to the Annenberg Theater is located behind the Annenberg Theater Box Office, adjacent to the Palm Springs Art Museum's North Parking Lot.
