Desert Lanai 4, A Charles Du Bois Community
$50 (1 hr) — 5 homes on this tour
First time on tour during Modernism Week, Desert Lanai is an intimate condominium community designed by famed midcentury architect Charles Du Bois and built by the Alexander Construction Company through four phases (the first started in 1961). The complex spans nine acres and offers numerous amenities and four pools amid its 82 total units. Desert Lanai 4, built in 1966, consists of 16 single-story condos (six units will be shown on our tour) surrounding a generous pool, enhanced by colorful desert landscape and the eponymous lanai.
Witness the architectural detail that has become synonymous with Du Bois: the “Swiss Miss” roofline. Alternately referred to as Alohauses for the Alpine and Polynesian influences, these visually arresting desert dwellings have become coveted trophies. Additional midcentury modern classic features include breeze block dividers between the properties and natural stone façades on every unit. Each home has been lovingly restored and you will enjoy viewing the unique décor that each homeowner has adapted to their personal lifestyle.
