Details

The historic Cavanagh Adobe (H. Addison Sanders, 1922; Historic Landmark #1, Indian Wells Historic Preservation Foundation) is one of the oldest structures in the Coachella Valley. It was extensively repaired and restored by the current homeowners, architects Michael Burch, FAIA, and Diane Wilk, AIA, in 2011. These dedicated preservationists took on this restoration with a respect for history and an eye for interior design as they created a sanctuary of sustainability. Their unique story informs us about modernism's synergy with Spanish revivalism in the 20th century and identifies harmonious and unexpected commonalities.

The house was built of 4 in. x 12 in. x 18 in. adobe bricks handmade on the site. The ceiling in the living room is supported by 12 in. x 12 in. hand hewn natural timbers. The clay roof tiles, handmade by La Quinta resident Joe Valenzuela, have a distinctive shape, achieved by bending clay over his thigh. The original structure was two bedrooms, one bath, with a second story sleeping porch. Today’s home features three bedrooms with three baths and a family room. Other additions include an outside pool and spa, an upstairs deck above the primary bedroom.

You will have the opportunity to tour the interior and exterior of this beautifully restored residence and gardens.
