Journey through 70 years of modern living with the iconic architecture of Tahquitz River Estates. Explore some of Palm Springs, oldest midcentury modern masterpieces - including designs by Hugh Kaptur, Allen Siple, Stephen Stepanian and Albert Frey - as well as modern day contemporary classics on land originally owned by famed footwear designer Dr. Scholl.
The beginnings of Tahquitz River Estates, originally named Palos Verdes Estates, are as storied as its legacy. In 1947, famed developer Paul Trousdale teamed up with local icon Pearl McCallum to convert the often flooded, yet scenic Tahquitz River wash as the anchor for the most ambitious housing development at the time, in Palm Springs. Tahquitz River Estates are among the oldest in Palm Springs to be recognized as modern with their expansive walls of glass, covered lanais and breezeways hidden behind the unassuming ranch style facades.
The 1948 Villager Magazine reported that "the swank nationally touted residential development...is destined to be somewhat of a movie colony judging from the large number of stage, screen and radio personalities who were buying there." The development not only brought accolades for its unique and inventive, comfortable living, but also attracted other defining architects anxious to leave their mark in the now iconic neighborhood.
The self-guided tour includes interiors and exteriors with homeowners on site to answer questions. The tour is produced by the Tahquitz River Estates Neighborhood Organization. Tour proceeds fund neighborhood improvements and donations to local organizations. Enjoy your journey!
