Details

Arthur Erickson is widely regarded as Canada’s greatest architect, renowned for his innovative designs and profound impact on contemporary architecture. His international career spanned several decades, during which he created iconic structures that continue to inspire. Notable projects include Simon Fraser University in Burnaby (1963–65), Robson Square in Vancouver (1979–83), and the UBC Museum of Anthropology, which opened in 1976. While some of his smaller projects employ post-and-beam timber, his most significant works were rendered in concrete—a material he referred to as the "marble of the twentieth century."

The year 2024 marked the centenary of Erickson's birth, prompting a renewed focus on his architectural legacy and its enduring influence on future generations of designers. His ability to blend architecture with the landscape and create spaces that resonate with their environment has left an indelible mark on the field.

Author and historian Donald Luxton, a Board member of the Arthur Erickson Foundation, presents an overview of his career and examines his most significant projects, highlighting how Erickson’s philosophy and approach to design have set a benchmark for architects worldwide.
