Details
This tour is a rare chance to see one of architectural designer Herbert W. Burns’ sublime residential designs. The beautifully detailed Crockett Residence (1951) is an intact example of the Late Moderne style, an aesthetic that featured simple yet sophisticated architecture, which contrasted an emphasis on the horizontal line with dynamic vertical detailing, all of which was imbued with a feeling of glamour.  Burns’ masterful use of the Late Moderne vocabulary produced high-quality, human-scaled structures appropriate to their desert surroundings. His self-described expertise as a “color consultant” is on full display here.  The Crockett Residence was designated a city of Palm Springs Class 1 Historic Resource in July 2021. This is a self-guided tour but tourgoers will receive a four-page color collectible handout.

As a special treat, Steven Keylon, author of PSPF’s popular 84-page book, The Design of Herbert W. Burns, will be available to sign copies of the book, which may be purchased by tour goers at a special, discounted price of only $10 each!

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.”  PSPF offers free membership as a public benefit.  To learn more about the work of the foundation see Palm Springs Preservation Foundation
